Saidi
The folk dances from El Said - southern Egypt are strong and proud
and are likened to the dance of the stallion. They can also be performed
with a stick. |
Stick Dance
From the strong earthy warrior style of stick dance to the more modern,
playful aspects, stick dancing is lively and fun. It provides a great
way to transform the blues to a triumphant celebration. Partnering
and group dances are energising and exhilarating. |

and going to the well to collect water to the general exuberance of
dancing with scarves and making beautiful patterns with group dances,

This elegant style with its upper body centred movements and graceful
arm work is a delight to dance. |
Veil Dance
Whether floating or draped around the body, dancing with a veil is a beautiful experience. Choreographies may include meditative dances or wilder aspects too. |
Drum Dance
Dancing to the tabla or darabouka is a great chance to become "one with the drum" where every beat is reflected in the body movements. It is great fun, challenging and dances can also be combined with playing sagat. Live music may be offered for this workshop too. |
Arabic Drum and
Dance
Karine and Arabic Drummer Chas Whitaker co-lead a series of popular workshops offering dancers a good chance to understand the rhythms in Arabic dance by first learning a dance, then learning to play the rhythms on darabouka. This format has proved to be a very accessible way of integrating the rhythms into the body. Improvising and multi-layering movements to the drum is also taught. |
