MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC AND DANCE CAMP
The first in the UK!
Wed 30 May - Sun 3 June 2007
|
|
3 days of dance, music making and community on a beautiful field in Dorset two miles from the sea.
The aim of the camp is to bring together dancers, drummers, instrumentalists, performers and friends to create a
unique experience where we all learn from each other, get to have fun and celebrate together as part of a community
living lightly on the earth. Workshops will be led by International teachers:
|
 |
AMEL TAFSOUT
Legendary Algerian dancer Amel (now living in the US) brings a rare depth of knowledge and understanding
from her ancient heritage. Her dance is mesmerising, and filled with spirit. |
|
SALAH DAWSON MILLER
Master drummer and ethnomusicologist, Salah is one of the
most respected drummers in the UK with an awesome
understanding of North African rhythms.
| |
|
 |
KARINE BUTCHART
Karine has taught and performed in the UK and abroad for over 15 years and brings a delightful mix of passion, soul
and playfulness to her dance. |
|
CHAS WHITAKER
Known for his clear, relaxed teaching style for drummers of all levels, and his expert support for dancers, Chas
has worked in the UK, abroad and has travelled extensively in the Middle East and North Africa researching rhythms.

|
 |
MAREN LUEG (Germany)
Maren is an accomplished player of several wind instruments (sax, flute, clarinet, ney and zourna). Proficient in
many styles of music she has a deep knowledge of Arabic music which she will share during the Camp. |
|
Workshops
Workshops will be aimed at people for all levels of dance/musical ability and run in a supportive and inclusive way. There will be three main workshop sessions per day – the main workshop being held in the large marquee - with additional workshops being held in a smaller space. Drumming will be offered at different levels. The programme will be available at the camp. There will also be gentle early morning session and evening events with opportunities to dance to live music or enjoy performing on the last performance night. |
The Camp
Although this is the camp’s first year it is organised and staffed by experienced personnel. The camp takes place in a beautiful field among rolling Dorset hills, containing water-points, willow-toilets, and a gas shower. There is an organic farm shop within walking distance.
People are encouraged to camp in circles and co-operate in the preparation of meals for which firewood is provided. You will need to bring your tent/campervan and everything you need for your own comfort (including something to sit on). Individual responsibility is encouraged throughout the camp with sensitivity to others with regard to noise, alcohol, and the cooking of meat. Recycling is an important part of the camp.
|
Children
Children
Children are welcome to the camp and we aim to provide alternative activities for the over 5’s during most daytime workshops. Teenagers are welcome to join the main workshops. Jane Flood, the celebrated storyteller will delight us all each day with her stories before the evening dance session. If the weather is good you may like to visit the beach which is just two miles away.
|
Café
There will be a small café on site for snacks, drinks and simple lunches with a Middle Eastern flavour.
|
Bazaar and Market
